Whatever Happened to QR Codes?
QR Codes to Fight a Comeback?
Once the promising way to link print material to the online world, QR codes have largely dropped off the radar.
Well, that is here in the west. In China it’s a different story and they are widely used.
The last time I can think of seeing them is on items imported from China, and sometimes they appear on 2 step authentication apps which you might use to secure passwords.
In China QR codes are commonly used in mobile wallets, such as WeChat wallet and in Alipay. These payment methods are extremely popular in the country. Scan the QR code, and you can authorise a payment using an additional SMS text verifification. And that basically concludes the process.
Another reason for the popularity of QR codes is that shoppers can use them to authenticate genuine products.
So it seems there may be a comback for these potentially very useful ID’s.
China could be a strong predictor for western trends, since in China the mobile is the preferred means of web access. In mobile internet China leads.
