Chinese users are abandoning We Chat over privacy fears. We Chat is extremely popular in China but that seems to be changing. In addition, the Chinese internet is dominated by three companies known as ‘BAT’; Baidu, Alibaba, and Tencent. We Chat has created its own ecosystem of features. It allows users to make payments by using an electronic social security ID. Importantly, people in China are avoiding We Chat, because of privacy issues. The parent company, Tencent has been recently required to hand over customer data to the government. However, brands operating on We Chat or in China are aware of how highly users value security and privacy. Brands themselves are in a tough position to meet privacy regulations. In general privacy is a growing concern, with some users reportedly switching to encyped text or phone calls.

We Chat users cannot share Taobao links directly, only if users download the video to their device or copy and paste a direct link. Blocking services from competitors is not new in China. In January, it was reported that We Chat blocked three competitors, Matong, Duoshan and Liaotianbao.

Fraudulent Ad Traffic sources in China

A study  in 2018 said 30% of all ad traffic was not ‘authentic’. This is driven by bots. Display traffic was worst, over 40% of display ad traffic comming from bots, but video traffic was significantly better at around 20% of video ad traffic being inauthentic.

Content on Douyin has trended

Douyin is a popular social media platform in China. Content on this platform has trended in a similar way to Western sites. Popular themes now are celebrities and comedy, but in depth topics and learning is also popular. Short video stories are very popular.  Celebrities posting in China are gaining 8 million new followers every month.   The top-ranked show in Douyin is Night Conversations in The Canteen with nearly 20 million followers.
