What commercial opportunities does visual search offer? Is it better then keyword-based search? Is it only a useful addition to keywords based search?

There are two different types of visual search. It is worth to get familiar with them.

  • First compares metadata keywords for similarities
  • Second takes the colour, shape and texture of the image and compares it to a database.

For brands which selling goods to consumers with established Pinterest strategies like for example Target it is great news. It presents a new opportunity to connect with users looking to purchase products.

The next question is how to optimize product images for these kinds of results? It is worth to study this issue further.

Also, voice search is growing very fast. Popularity of it is an barometer that audience is moving away from keyword-based search and towards more intuitive methods. Keywords are still the easiest way to access most information but visual and voice search are very useful addition.
