Virtual Reality Advertising

VR has excited the imagination for years but always still seems a few years away from happening. Still, Google is banking on Virtual Reality advertising.

Google is working already on the means to incorporate adverts into its VR platforms. And it reports that in the last year VR related search traffic has increased 4 fold!

First, lets look at whats happening in VR.

There are two main approaches, one is full headsets with their own screens. The other, which Google is banking on, is cheap attachments that go onto your smart phone and deliver different images to each eye.

The first of these simple devices was Google Cardboard


Now they are launching another viewer called Daydream, which has additional functionalities.


VR videos and photos are being made by new generations of cameras and can be uploaded to platforms like Youtube.Also, Youtube also has 360 degree photo and video functionality, so you can use a headset and change your viewing position. Ads filmed in this format already exist on Youtube.

Because these new devices are much cheaper than full headsets, Google is intending to promote interest and uptake in VR. It’s doing that, because it knows it must stay in pole spot as an advertising platform.

So how will this relate to the advertiser?

First, it seems obvious that Google will know when a Youtube video is being viewed in VR. So, it most likely will allow an AdWords option to advertise 3D video ad placements on those youtube videos.

Secondly, there is the potential for product placement inside the video experience, games and apps. Google will need to develop something like a Display Network for games and videos for this feature.

All in all, these options will require specialist skills by advertisers.

One thing that interests me is the plain text links that appear over videos. These could be 3-D as well, which Google would handle automatically. Also, you may be able to load a 3-D logo with such a link. Selecting it however would be a challenge, without gaze tracking.
