User Personas

UX is a very basic concept where you must prioritize your user and how they can have a flawless experience using your site and accessing what you have to offer them. To create the best experience possible, these principles need to put in place from the very beginning.

It may be far too familiar using a site or app that seemingly has paid little to no attention to user experience. A frustrating experience of trying to do a simple task and having it take a painfully long time. Or perhaps you have completed a long form which, upon submitting, throws an error and forgets all the input. For many users, they will leave the site in frustration.

While it may seem like a simple and easy idea, it is deceptively difficult to achieve a UX that pleases a sites whole target market. In order to ensure your site is user friendly, you will need a lot of time and patience. There will be a fair amount of trial and error involved.

However, you mustn’t be scared off, as once you’ve got it right, the pay off is worth all the time and frustration. Your users will be happier, and conversions will increase.

User Personas

In order to create the best possible experience cor your users, you need to know who they are and what they want. You may think that you already have all of this information in your marketing department, but this is not what you need. Marketing knows the target market; gender, age, where they live and what they do. To create a persona, you need a generalized idea of your audiences behaviour and psychology. This way, you can anticipate how they will use your site.

There is no ‘best way’ to create personas. However, the most effective ways usually involve the following key steps.

  1. Identify who your users are
  2. Create a questionnaire and user research interviews
  3. Record results
  4. Study the results and identify trends
  5. Create individual personas using this data

These steps are of course a broad idea of what needs doing. They should be tailored to your specific site and what you have to offer.

Don’t delay

It is important that you take detailed notes on you findings as soon as possible. The process maybe long a tiring. But, if you do not record the results as soon as possible, the results will diminish in quality the more time passes. You should not rely on your memory to record data that is this important for the success of your site.

Use your data

Use the data you have gathered and enter them into a matrix, which clearly shows the data in a comprehensive way.

Then, you can identify trends in your user data. These can include certain attitudes and behaviours. As you segment these groups, you should begin seeing trends form.

These particular aspects of the user can be used to create persona profiles for groups of users, and will allow you to understand what they want.
