UK Leading Mobile Ecommerce Trends

Mobile purchasing continues to grow as more people become accustomed to using Smart Phones, and the useability of phones and mobile-served web pages continues to improve.


The latest data shows the UK well in the lead for mobile purchasing amongst its European peers.

ComScore conducted research that shows in Q1 of this year.  34% of British smart phone users had made an online purchase. 19.2% in Germany and only 13.5% in France.

Surprisingly, this is in spite of the fact that both France and Germany have a higher percentage of their population who own Smart Phones.

What is interesting is that mobile web based purchases in most of the surveyed European countries are outperforming mobile App purchases by about 50%.

Only in the UK, purchases from mobile apps are almost equal with purchases from a mobile web browser.

In conclusion, it appears that confidence with Smart Phone use is the key to these trends.

Leisure time in the UK has always trended more towards TV viewing compared with other countries.

Consequently, now this pattern has translated to Smart Phones. Viewing content online is extremely popular.

In the countries that lag the UK, over 1/3 of all purchases that are made from a Smart Phone are made by mobile apps.

Therefore certain ecommerce businesses should certainly consider developing apps. Tthey will position themselves well for future growth.

75-80% of Europeans own smartphones. Therefore the key to mobile ecommerce growth is with user confidence, website useability and in the future apps.

This underlines the importance of a dedicated mobile ecommerce strategy.

It means a website that is ‘responsive’ to view and navigate easily on any smart phone, or a dedicated mobile website (Accelerated Mobile Pages) needs to be implimented.
