Social Media Site Twitter Celebrates 7th Birthday
Seven years ago Twitter was launched, and it changed communication forever. The social media site recently reached its seventh birthday. It all started in 2006, when Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey sent his first tweet, which read “just setting up my twttr” (as the service’s name was written originally).
Over the course of a few short years, Twitter grew into a social media micro-blogging and news giant. Twitter has an estimated 200 million active users in 2013.
The social media tool began as a way for people to share their thoughts and communicate with others. However while Twitter was used for communications between people, it turned into a real-time media machine.
The most famous tweet ever sent was by Barack Obama whose “Four more years” was retweeted 811,000 times, when he was re-elected to the White House. The Mariana Trench, in the Pacific Ocean, is the deepest spot on earth. James Cameron, director of Titanic, was the first person to reach the trench alone, and amazingly the first person to tweet from there too.
The social media site reported that it’s now seeing over 200 million active users send 400 million tweets per day, marking quite a bit of growth over the past year. On its sixth birthday last year, the company stated it was seeing 340 million tweets per day.
