Russia’s Google Experiments with Radical Search Ideas
Yandex, which captures about 60% of Russia’s search engine market, is about to trial a new search principle that doesn’t use links to generate search rankings, which is central to other search engines, and instead will focus on rating the sites useability and content, with an emphasis on user behavior and engagement.
This is due to the high level of noise in the use of links to rank websites, especially in more commercial queries.
And this issue isn’t only unique to Russia, so this could be a momentous development in search engine design elsewhere.
For now the new methods will only be rolled-out in the Moscow area.
Yandex also has a special analytics package called Metrika that can even give a users-eye view of the site and records a video of this so developers can see where and what users are reacting to in a detailed way, including mouse movements.
