Search Engine Optimisation, also known as SEO, is about how well your website and its pages rank in relevant search results.

It can get to be a bewildering and irritatingly buzz-word loaded subject at times, but there are guidelines set by Google, Bing and Yahoo to help with this. Here we will talk briefly through some of the key factors they use to help rank your site well.

Adverts in moderation

Organic incoming links (these are a big topic in their own right and there are many do’s and many more dont’s)

Good quality and unique content

Good navigation and site structure – (also relates to having Sitemaps (HTML & XML) and the complementary Robots.Txt)

Social media connections (for example Google particularly values pages on Google+)

Page load times (faster the better, under 5 seconds is a good target in general)

Good Metadata

Has Robots.Txt

Sitemaps (HTML & XML)

Graphics content, right file types, sizes and naming

Mobile optimisation (display on different devices)

Not too many 301 redirects

Now that is not exactly a slim list. And to a web designer who is learning from scratch, its a lot to think about and get right.
