iBeacon – Major Players Begin Backing

iBeacons, the new Bluetooth-based location sensing technology from Apple, is gradually being developed by major companies to assist in their retail activities.

The technology we earlier mentioned in the massive Regent Street revamp where a number of retailers have worked together to install technology that will work with iBeacons.

Now several more big brands are experimenting with the technology to assist in their engagement and marketing intelligence efforts, such as Odeon cinemas.

Virgin Media have also got in on the idea, as covered in their blog.

Waitrose and Easyjet are also trialing the technology.

iBeacon allows your smart phone, (it is available on Android as well as Apple devices), to communicate wirelessly with nearby computers in the establishment you are visiting, and stream relevant info like special offers to your phone, potentially in different areas of the building.

To get people to use the technology, which considering the potential for it to become intrusive, retailers are looking to incentivise users by providing direct to them special offers.
