Googles Confusing Policy on Links

Here is an interesting blog that lays it straight about the difficulties inherent now with linking strategies to boost website rankings.

It mirrors some more general thoughts about the fundamental nature of having just one search engine providing nearly all the search market. The result of this initially looks to be more convenient since we can focus on one or two search engines which ought to make life easier from our point of view. But the downside is that the ‘ecosystem’ of the internet now reacts to just one major player and this causes the marketers and website designers to try to get around that one system, and a cat and mouse game then results between Google and the marketing community, in which one reacts to the other until now we have extremely complicated rules and behavior.

It is a shame to punish sites for linking strategies through no fault of their own, since many of these may be the best community type of sites with very high levels of genuine engagement.

That was for me what made Google’s strategy so good to begin with and it aided such sites in the earlier days, before marketing strategies polluted it. Today it’s efforts to fix this problem have led to the current difficulties that some marketers are experiencing, and confusion about how important link building is.
