Google’s ‘Carousel’ – What is it?

Google has launched its ‘Carousel’, a search bar at the top of the results page that shows up with certain particular searches.

t will not always appear so you may still be yet to encounter it. Its main task is to give easy and tidy information targeted for local services.

Information such as the quality of reviews and the average distance between the destination indicated (such as how far a hotel is from a town) are used so Google can provide relevant results. So far the main industries that may trigger a carousel result to appear are travel, hotel and restaurant queries, but this is expanding, to include for example pure knowledge queries like “greatest hits 2011” displaying music results. The Carousel can contain 20 results which can be scrolled horizontally.

When you click an image in the carousel, it changes the main information that normally appears on the right as the featured info box/map, but also produce brand specific results underneath the carousel.

Where does Google get this information? Mainly from Google+ accounts, which we will discuss in the Google Carousel Optimisation articles following this post.
