Googles ‘Carousel’ for Local Search – Optimisation Part 3

Google’s new Carousel feature is an opportunity to get your local business to show up in the most visible place in Google’s newly organised search results page, via the scrolling strip at the top which appears in some search results (the ‘Carousel’).

We see that this results bar pulls information from Google accounts like Google+ or Google Maps, including location and photos. It also ranks results not only if it can find relevant location information, but also because you have good reviews. Here this is dependent on Google+ reviews and user citations. Ratings on other ratings sites are useful for social rankings and traffic but wont contribute directly to the Carousel ranking or the displayed ranking in the result shown.

So ensuring you get good reviews on Google+ will be essential to take advantage of the new Carousel. It should be remembered though that most searches at present do not trigger the Carousel to appear, and this is true even in searches that are mostly targeted for the feature, like leisure and tourism. If there aren’t enough decent local results to display then the Carousel wont be triggered at all.
