Mobile First Indexing


Google has announced mobile first indexing. ‘Mobile First’ is a term meaning that mobiles, rather than desktops, are the predominant consideration. For example in website design, or in indexing used by Search Engines.

Google is particularly driving this. Websites that have a mobile friendly design are gaining a ranking boost. Now it is indexing websites – which affects its ranking – first by its mobile friendliness, then by desktop friendliness.

So, Google is starting to prioritise mobile accessibility in the way it crawls your site.

This does not mean that if your website is not mobile friendly, that it wont rank on desk top searches, but gradually the lack of a mobile freindly site will likely effect its desktop ranking one day.

Google Driving a Mobile First Internet

Google is almost fanatical about mobile. It really views this as the future and is anxious to position itself ahead of the pack. As such it is effectively pressurising people to think ‘mobile first’ as well.

Now, what this means is that to rank well on mobiles, you will need to make sure you have a mobile freindly design. Googles indexing bots examine the sites user friendliness. This is used to form ranking signals.

Fast site loading and site formatting and navigation are key elements. There are two ways, both seem to be equally valid – the responsive website – which has different design elements and layouts for specific screen sizes, and Accelerated Mobile Pages, which is a parallel set of simplified mobile pages that load when mobiles access your site.

AMP vs Responsive Websites

The advantage of AMP is faster loading, and these pages can be added to an existing website without having to redesign the existing site for mobiles.

But, if you have complex JavaScript elements and web forms to fill in, then a Responsive Website design is the way to go. AMP is good for simple content.

Now that Google crawls your site first from a mobile perspective then from desktop useability, we can see where things are going. More than half of web searches are now performed on mobiles. It’s definitely time to create a mobile strategy for your business.

One thing to avoid is Flash elements in your websites. Mobiles however in general have no isssues dealing with Javascript elements.
