Google Analytics data collection strategy mistakes are very common.

What are the most repeated errors in Google Analytics Data?

  • firstly, being far too optimistic about the precision of the data. Measure twice.
  • secondly, creating good GA strategy. Think about goals, opportunity.
  • also, not checking setup. Make sure things are properly configured before setting things live.
  • ignoring Real Time reports. Check if the right events and goals are tracking.
  • forgetting tracking every page. It lead to missing certain data. Is your Analytics script on every webpage?
  • incorrect using UTM tags. There are five UTM tags used by GA: Medium, Source, Campaign, Content, Term.
  • not using GA filters. They can help clean up your data. It is one of most common errors. It is important to separate view that include some filters. For example sessions from internal IPs, removing query strings etc

 

  • incorrect setting up cross-domain tracking. This is a very common problem.
  • faulty using Google Tag Manager and Google Analytics.
  • not automating reporting. There are two main ways people automate reporting with GA.
  • poor views strategy. Lots of companies only have one view setup. The most useful are: Master view – where you work from, Sandbox view – where you try new implementations first to see that they work and Raw data view – untouched.
  • ignoring annotations. They’re basically notes you can use to add context to your Analytics reports. It is important to annotate anything you think might need context: big traffic spikes, start of marketing campaigns, website experiments, competitors activities etc.
  • forgetting about google tag manager and goals. You can’t analyse your funnel behaviour if you don’t have goals set up.

 

  • also, not setting up events and custom your alerts.
  • many Analytics implementations have duplicate tracking in place.
