Google Acquires Military Robot Developer
In a somewhat strange move, Google has acquired Boston Dynamics, designer of military robots for the Pentagon.
My first thought was this was a PR disaster for Google, being a global brand it seems a misstep to associate with the military and with the military-government complex of any one country, and with many of Google’s most enthusiastic users being sci-fi aware the association with ‘Skynet‘ is virtually inevitable. Given that the brands success was largely built on appearing human focused and creative it may seem like a bit of a conflicting diversion for the company from a brand point of view.
What you may be unaware of is that incredibly this is the EIGHTH robot company acquired by Google in the last 6 months, suggesting it is a major focus of the company.
In a tweet, Google’s Andy Rubin optimistically said the “future is looking awesome.” Judging by comments around the web Joe Public is both supportive, trepidatious and skeptical of that.
One thing seems to be for sure, we can expect future robots to look less like Terminator than the Atlas robot does, especially given the companies unofficial motto ‘Dont be evil’.
