Checkout: UX Features That Create User Flow

Your visitor has reached the checkout. This is where you must focus your efforts to get them to ensure they convert. 67.91% of potential customers will quit here, so you need all the help you can get to get as many sales as possible!

Forgotten Field

When adding a product to a cart, it is easy to forget to select the colour/size that you want. Make the process smoother by adding a pop up if a field is missed to quickly select the option wanted.

Don’t Lose The Basket

It is preferable to have a basket that saves for the user. Somethimes this isn’t an option for a user with no account.

If the basket will only be saved for a limited time, let your customers know by adding a timer or popup with the time remaining. Let them knbow it will save for longer by signing up for an account.

Free Shipping

Tell the customers how much more they have to spend to get free shipping! Anyone who is close to the threshold will have a hard time not adding something to the cart.

And let them know when they’ve got it for free. Don’t let them worry about the cost of shipping.#

Add Relevant Services

If you offer installation service, removals, insurance etc, add it as an add on option when viewing the basket.

They are likely going to need these services, and giving them the option in such a convenient way may sway them to choose you.

Financial Options

If you offer pay monthly or credit options, add this as an option in the basket when the order total is high. This may help a customer who is hesitant to spend a very large amount of money in one go.

Delivery Info

Give information on your delivery. Highlight how quick and convenient it is. If you offer text updates or tracking, tell the customer sooner rather than later.

Contact Info

Add your number, live chat and FAQ’s clearly to the checkout page. If your customer experiences and problems or needs some help, they are less likely to ditch the cart and will ask for help instead.

Form Field Reminder

Keep the field label visible. If it shifts up instead of disappearing, the customer is less likely to make an error.


Reassure your customers that their data will be safe and not sold to other companies.

Checkout Progress Bar

Add a checkout progress bar. This will give people a good idea of how long the process will take. If it is a long process, they are less likely to leave.

Be Specific

Customer want to know when their parcel will arrive. If the are given a rough estimate of when it is going to arrive like 3-5 days, it is frustrating if it takes 5. If you can, give them a date, or at least a latest date. Then if it arrives sooner, it is a pleasant surprise.

Help The New Customers

Add icons next to fields that may need clarification for new users. Keep in mind, some customer may need more help than others, so be as clear as possible in your explanations.
