Some simple tips to get the most out of your blog and it’s SEO and user engagement impact:

If you have your analytics set up well, you can identify which blog pages generate the most views. Also, if you have a feed set up so that each blog automatically makes a post onto Facebook, Google+, each of these pages will provide you information on how many people have seen the post.

From these insights, you will be able to eventually spot trends regarding what type of subject or which characteristic led to the most interest and shares or likes. This will help you focus your time and effort more effectively.

For example, on our blog, the most engagement comes from step by step guides which discuss key areas in some detail but try to keep the message simple for near beginners.

Many other companies find that the blogs that do well are also the ones that keep it simple but are comprehensive enough to be useful. These blogs can also be described as usually the ‘ever-green’ ones.

This is not true for everyone though, some have found that B2C businesses do better with this strategy, but B2B businesses may do better with more technical levels of communication.

In general the best engagement will usually be seen with more ever-green, well written guides communicated as simply as possible, without over-complicating the issue.  Updating older blogs of this type with new information and links to related blogs will help with your SEO efforts just like publishing more blogs.

For other businesses however, a happy, upbeat and picture based communication may be more useful where depth of content is not so necessary, and conveys the personality of the business to potential customers, which is more difficult to measure, although intuitively it is the right path to take. Blogging can be a good means to create a friendly, trustworthy shop window for your business.  To get the most out of this a blog on it’s own is probably not sufficient, and constructing a feed to Facebook and other social media will amplify your efforts.
