Which factors determine YouTube video rankings?

  • Firstly, Video file name – Use target keywords
  • Secondly, View density – If your video receives a lot of views in a short space of time, it’s more likely to be pushed up the rankings.
  • Meta tags – When you upload a video you can tag it with your keywords. 6-8 tags are thought to be the ideal amount.
  • Flags/Reports – These are negative factors which could harm your video’s visibility.
  • Title – character limit is 100 characters, place keywords towards the front of the title
  • Description – only 5,000 characters
  • Subtitles, closed captions and transcripts. These make the videos accessible to a wider audience.
  • In-video annotations : Annotations allow you to add linkable text to a video; including notes, calls to action, and links to related video assets
  • Also, Likes and dislikes, Comments, View Counts – provide an indication of the engagement around a video.
